Online privacy training: What You Now Know

Protecting Your Online Privacy training in a 2:34 animated story. It covers Oversharing, privacy settings, data brokers. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • Identify how small public posts (a routine, a pet's name, a birthday, a location pin) add up to tell a stranger where you'll be and help them guess security answers.

  • Check your privacy settings: share with friends, not everyone; turn off location on posts; look back through old public posts.

  • Post places after you've left, not while you're there, and ask friends before they tag you live.

  • State what data brokers do, ask them to remove you, and give your number, birthday and address only where they're really needed.

The story

“What You Now Know” is the story at the heart of this course. Grace (social media manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Joud's live post shows the bench, the pin 'Sidra Park' and 'Every morning before work! 6:30 Club', with Grace tagged. What can a stranger learn from it?

  • Very little: it's a photo of a bench, not of Grace.
  • Only where Joud is, because it's Joud's own post.
  • Where Grace is now, and where she'll be tomorrow.
  • Nothing, unless the stranger already knows Grace.

Correct answer: Where Grace is now, and where she'll be tomorrow.

Why: The pin gives the place, 'Live' gives the time, 'every morning' gives the routine, and the tag gives Grace's name. Small posts add up.

What You Now Know [0:00] Joud: Posted! Live from our bench. Say good morning, Mango. [0:06] Narrator: For twenty seconds, look at Grace the way a stranger would. Only what's public. [0:12] Narrator: A live post, with a pin. Where she is, right now. [0:17] Narrator: Her name is tagged, and her profile is public: the 6:30 Club, every morning. [0:23] Narrator: An old post: her dog, with his name on the tag. [0:27] Narrator: A birthday post, with the date. [0:30] Narrator: And a people-search site lists her street and part of her number. [0:37] Narrator: What do you now know about Grace? [0:44] Narrator: Where she'll be tomorrow at 6:30. Her dog's name. Her birthday. Her street. Twenty seconds. That's all it took. [0:54] Narrator: Small posts add up. Together they tell a stranger where she'll be, and help them guess security answers. [1:04] Joud: Grace, look. I just found myself on this people-search site. Then I found you. [1:10] Grace: My street, and part of my number. Right. Let's fix this before work. [1:16] Grace: My profile: friends only, not everyone. And location off for new posts. [1:22] Grace: Now the old ones. Mango's photo, my birthday: friends only, pins off. [1:30] Narrator: Check your privacy settings: share with friends, not everyone. Turn off location on posts, and look back through old ones. [1:40] Grace: These sites collect details from forms, apps and public records. I'm asking this one to remove me. [1:49] Narrator: They're called data brokers, and they sell what they collect. Ask them to remove you, then check again later. [1:57] Grace: No birthday or number on raffle and loyalty forms. And Mango stops being an answer to anything. [2:04] Narrator: Give your number, birthday and address only where they're really needed. [2:10] Narrator: Post places after you've left, not while you're there. And ask friends before they tag you live. [2:17] Grace: Tomorrow. And no pin. [2:21] Narrator: Before you post, ask: who can see this, and what does it tell them? Questions? Contact your security team.
