Online payments training: The New Account

Online Payments training in a 2:29 animated story. It covers Changed bank details, invoice and CEO fraud, verifying payments. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • Identify three clues of invoice fraud (business email compromise) in an email thread: a lookalike sender who has joined a real conversation, a request to change bank details (the key sign, even from a genuine address), and pressure to skip a phone check (email only, pay today).

  • State how to check a change of bank details: call the supplier on a number you already know, such as the one in the supplier file, never one from the email; replying is not checking, and if you can't reach them, the payment waits.

  • Apply the same phone check and the usual approvals to a secret, urgent payment request that seems to come from a senior leader (CEO fraud).

  • State the two steps after a payment has gone to a fraudster: call your bank at once, on the bank's own number, then report it to your security team.

The story

“The New Account” is the story at the heart of this course. Karim (finance manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

At 11:52 the real supplier replies: the account Karim paid at 09:05 isn't theirs. What should Karim do first?

  • Reply in the thread and ask whoever got the money to send it back.
  • Call his bank at once on the bank's own number, then report it.
  • Wait until Nujoom Shipping confirms the problem in a formal letter.
  • Pay the real supplier first, and look into the lost payment later.

Correct answer: Call his bank at once on the bank's own number, then report it.

Why: Speed matters most: the sooner the bank knows, the better the chance of freezing the money. Then the security team needs to know.

The New Account [0:00] Karim: Sorry, I'll call you back. Not their account? But we paid Nujoom this morning. [0:06] Narrator: At nine, over eighty-six thousand dirhams went to Nujoom's new bank account. But Nujoom never had a new account. [0:17] Karim: Karim Nasser, Nakhlora Finance. This morning's payment went to a fraudster. Please freeze the money now. [0:25] Narrator: Then he reports it to the security team. [0:30] Layla: You called the bank first, on its own number. Good: hours matter. Now let's see how they did it. [0:39] Narrator: This thread started with the real Nujoom Shipping. Then someone else joined in. Can you spot where? [0:50] Layla: Here: r and n, side by side, look like an m. From this email on, you were writing to someone else. [0:58] Karim: But it had our whole conversation. The same invoice, the same signature. [1:03] Layla: Anyone with the thread can copy it, even the letterhead. The key sign of invoice fraud: new bank details, whoever sends them. [1:11] Layla: Phones down, email only, and a late fee after today. They didn't want you to call. [1:18] Karim: I did check. I replied and asked them to confirm. [1:22] Layla: And your reply went straight to them. Replying isn't checking. Call a number you already know, from the supplier file. [1:31] Narrator: Bank details changed? Call a number you already know, not one from the email. Can't reach them? The payment waits. [1:40] Layla: This time, the fraudster's bank froze most of it. We checked your mailbox; Nujoom's may be hacked, so we warned them. [1:48] Narrator: Already paid? Call your bank at once, then report it. The sooner you call, the more can be saved. [1:57] Narrator: Fraudsters also pretend to be the boss: secret, urgent, a new account. Call a number you already know. Keep every approval. [2:07] Karim: Secret, urgent, and a new account? I'll call his office first. [2:15] Narrator: One habit: bank details changed? Call a number you already know before you pay. Unsure? Report it, or contact your security team.
