Smishing training: Same Text, Two Phones

Smishing training in a 2:35 animated story. It covers SMS and messaging-app scams: delivery fees, bank alerts, fake support. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • Identify three red flags in a delivery-fee text: a sender that is a mobile number, a link that is not the courier's own site, and a small fee due today.

  • Check a delivery or bank text through the courier's own app or the number on the back of your card, never through the link or number in the text.

  • State that you never read out or forward a code, because a real bank or support team will never ask for it, and that you hang up and call back on a number you already know.

  • Respond to a friendly 'wrong number' or 'support' chat by not replying, then blocking and reporting it, and report a text about work to your security team.

The story

“Same Text, Two Phones” is the story at the heart of this course. Grace (social media manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Grace really is expecting a parcel when a text asks her to pay AED 6.50 to redeliver it. What should she do?

  • Pay it: AED 6.50 is too little to be worth a scam.
  • Open the link, and pay only if it shows her parcel.
  • Check her parcel in the Parcelia app she already has.
  • Reply to the text and ask for her tracking number.

Correct answer: Check her parcel in the Parcelia app she already has.

Why: Check in the courier's own app, or a site you type yourself, never through the text's link. Paying through the link hands her card details to the scammer.

Same Text, Two Phones [0:02] Grace: Pay to redeliver? But my parcel's coming today. [0:06] Grandpa: A parcel? I haven't ordered anything. Nonsense. [0:11] Narrator: One text, two phones, the same second. Scam texts like this are called smishing. Can you spot the red flags? [0:24] Grace: It's from a mobile number, not Parcelia. And that link isn't their site. [0:30] Grace: Their own app says out for delivery, nothing to pay. A small fee, due today, to make me pay without thinking. [0:40] Narrator: A delivery fee? Check in the courier's own app, or type its site yourself. Never use the link. [0:50] Grandpa: My card, blocked? My pension goes on that card! [0:56] Scammer: Crescent Savings, fraud team. Mark speaking. Don't worry, sir, we'll sort this out together. [1:02] Scammer: I've just sent you a code. Read it out to me, and your card's unblocked. [1:10] Grace: Grandpa, it's me. Did you get a parcel text too? It's a scam. Don't touch it. [1:17] Grandpa: I'm on with the bank, dear. My card's blocked. The man needs the code they sent. [1:23] Grace: Don't read it out. Hang up, Grandpa, and call back on a number you already know. [1:30] Grandpa: He sounded so kind, and I was frightened. I nearly did. [1:36] Grace: Turn your card over. That number is the bank's own. We'll call it together, on speaker. [1:44] Bank: Crescent Savings Bank. Your card isn't blocked, sir, and we'd never ask you for a code. Let's check your account together. [1:53] Narrator: A bank alert says call or tap? Call the number on the back of your card. [2:01] Narrator: Never read out or forward a code. A real bank or support team will never ask for it. [2:08] Narrator: A friendly 'wrong number' or a 'support' chat? Don't reply. Block it, and report it. [2:16] Narrator: A text about work? Report it to your security team. [2:21] Narrator: One habit: a text says pay, tap or call? Check through the app you have, or a number you already know.
