BYOD training: But Why?

BYOD training in a 2:31 animated story. It covers Personal devices for work: enrolment, keeping work separate, a lost device. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • State why you enrol your own phone or tablet for work through your company's portal: work gets its own area, which can be removed.

  • Identify screenshots and copies of work in your own photos, chats or cloud as out of place, and delete and report any you find.

  • State the order before a device with work on it is sold, given away or repaired: tell IT Support first, then reset it.

  • Report a lost device with work on it to IT Support or your security team at once.

The story

“But Why?” is the story at the heart of this course. Emma (account manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Emma's old tablet still has her work mail and client files on it, and her brother is waiting for it. What should she do first?

  • Reset it to factory settings herself, then hand it over.
  • Sign out of every work app and give it to him tonight.
  • Message IT Support, so they take the work area off.
  • Delete the work apps one by one, then give it to him.

Correct answer: Message IT Support, so they take the work area off.

Why: Before a device with work on it changes hands, tell IT Support first: they take the work area off properly, then you reset it. Resetting it alone, signing out or deleting apps skips that step.

But Why? [0:01] Leo: So it's mine now? [0:02] Emma: Not yet. [0:04] Leo: Why not? [0:05] Emma: It still has work on it. My work mail, client files, the lot. [0:10] Emma: So before anything else, I message IT Support. [0:15] Leo: Why IT Support? It's your tablet. You paid for it. [0:19] Emma: My tablet, the company's data. They take work off properly, then I reset it. [0:28] Emma: See? I enrolled it on day one: set it up through the company's portal. Work got its own area. [0:36] Narrator: Selling, giving away or repairing a device with work on it? Tell IT Support first, then reset it. [0:46] Leo: Why is there a Qindeel Events price list in your holiday photos? [0:51] Emma: For months, I've screenshotted client price lists to read on flights. Two are in my own cloud, too. [0:58] Emma: That's not where work lives. My mistake. The work area's gone, but these were never in it. [1:06] Emma: Now the two in my cloud, and the bin. Then I tell my security team. [1:14] Narrator: Found work in your own photos, chats or cloud? Delete it, and tell your security team. [1:23] Narrator: Four things from an old tablet. Which belong in the work area, and which are yours? [1:33] Narrator: Contract and price list: work area only, so never a screenshot in her photos. Holiday photos and boarding pass: hers. [1:45] Leo: Why does work get a say on your tablet at all? [1:49] Emma: Because if I lose it, they can remove the work part. I'd tell IT Support or my security team at once. [2:00] Narrator: Your own phone or tablet for work? Enrol it through your company's portal, so work gets its own area. [2:09] Emma: Work off, reset, all yours. And no more whys. [2:14] Leo: Why— [2:16] Emma: That's why. [2:18] Narrator: One habit: work stays in the work apps. Passing your device on, or lost it? Tell IT Support or your security team.
