VPN awareness training: The Road, Not the Door

VPN Awareness training in a 2:50 animated story. It covers What a VPN does and does not protect you from. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • State what a VPN protects: a private, encrypted connection between your device and your company's network that others on the same Wi-Fi can't read or change.

  • State three things a VPN does not do: check addresses, links or files; make you anonymous; clean a device that is already infected.

  • Identify when you need the VPN: on any network you don't control (hotels, cafes, airports) and to reach company systems from outside.

  • Respond to a sign-in page from a link: go to the portal yourself; if you typed your password into the wrong page, report it to your security team at once, then change your password.

The story

“The Road, Not the Door” is the story at the heart of this course. Hana (project manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Hana's laptop shows 'Nakhlora VPN · Connected'. A text offers a free upgrade if she signs in with her work account. What is the right way to think about it?

  • The VPN is on, so nothing she types on that page can be stolen by anyone.
  • The VPN guards the connection, not the page: she still checks it.
  • It's safe if the page shows the hotel's own logo and colours.
  • It's safe, because the text knows her room number.

Correct answer: The VPN guards the connection, not the page: she still checks it.

Why: A VPN protects what travels between her device and the company network. It doesn't check whether a page is real, so a fake sign-in page is just as dangerous with it on.

The Road, Not the Door [0:02] Hana: A free upgrade, just for a rating? VPN's on, so it's fine. [0:15] Hana: Wait. A hotel page asking for my work password? That address isn't ours. [0:23] Hana: Layla, it's Hana. I've just typed my work password into a fake hotel page. That's on me. [0:30] Layla: Good, you called fast. We've signed you out everywhere. Now change your password. [0:36] Hana: Doing it now. This time I typed our own portal address. [0:44] Hana: But the VPN was on the whole time. Doesn't that keep me safe? [0:50] Layla: It keeps you safe on the way. Picture a covered road from your laptop to our company network. [0:57] Layla: It's encrypted, so others on the hotel Wi-Fi can't read or change what travels on it. [1:06] Narrator: Quick check, three times: yes or no. Does the VPN protect her here? [1:17] Layla: Someone on the hotel Wi-Fi? Yes, the road's covered. A fake page, or a harmful attachment? No. [1:26] Layla: It guards the road, not where you arrive. It doesn't check an address, a link or a file for you. [1:37] Hana: So the road was safe. I just walked through the wrong door. [1:42] Hana: At least it hides who I am, right? [1:45] Layla: No. Sites you sign in to still know it's you. And if your laptop's already infected, the VPN won't clean it. [1:56] Layla: Use it on any network you don't control: hotels, cafes, airports. And to reach our systems from outside, as our policy asks. [2:10] Narrator: If a link opens a sign-in page, go to the portal yourself. [2:15] Narrator: Typed your password into the wrong page? Report it to your security team at once, then change your password. [2:25] Emma: Hana, it's Emma. About tomorrow's flight: is the VPN enough at the airport? [2:31] Hana: Use it. It guards the road. You still check the door. [2:37] Narrator: The VPN protects the road, not where it leads. Still check every link and sign-in page. Unsure? Contact your security team.
