Home network training: Everyone Has the Password

Home Network Security training in a 2:41 animated story. It covers Router password, firmware, guest network. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • State the router's two passwords, the Wi-Fi password and the admin password, and change both from the default to strong ones of your own.

  • Keep the router's own software (firmware) updated with automatic updates on, and replace a router its maker has stopped fixing.

  • Choose the right network for each device: visitors and smart devices on the guest network, your own devices and work laptop on the main one.

  • Explain that everyone with your Wi-Fi password shares a network with your laptop and phone, and change it when too many people have it.

The story

“Everyone Has the Password” is the story at the heart of this course. Sami (site security officer) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

At home, who shares a network with your laptop and phone?

  • Only the devices you set up yourself.
  • Everyone who has your main Wi-Fi password.
  • Only the people inside your home right now.
  • Nobody, as long as your laptop has a password.

Correct answer: Everyone who has your main Wi-Fi password.

Why: Everyone with your Wi-Fi password, and every device they connect, is on the same network as your laptop and phone, even from next door, like Hamad. A laptop password doesn't change that.

Everyone Has the Password [0:01] Sami: It's slow. I want the fastest one you've got. [0:04] Zaid: Speed in a minute. First, one question: who has your Wi-Fi password? [0:11] Sami: My cousins, at Eid. The plumber, when the sink leaked. [0:15] Sami: Hamad next door, when their internet went down. He's still on it. [0:20] Sami: The maths tutor. The old caretaker. A whole year of being kind. [0:26] Zaid: Everyone with that password shares a network with your laptop and phone. [0:31] Sami: Ten? I can name six. [0:35] Zaid: The router's own software, the firmware: last updated four years ago. Its maker has stopped fixing it. [0:44] Sami: At work, Camera Four gets its own password and every update. My router at home got neither. [0:51] Zaid: You don't need the fastest; fewer people on it will help. This one still gets fixes and installs them itself. [0:59] Zaid: It has two passwords. The admin one controls the router itself; the Wi-Fi one lets people on. [1:07] Sami: Then the admin one first. Off the default: long, strong, and mine. [1:13] Sami: And a new Wi-Fi password. The old one's had a busy year. [1:18] Sami: Automatic updates on. When its maker stops fixing it, I replace it. [1:24] Zaid: Last, a guest network: for visitors, the TV and the door camera. [1:29] Sami: Guests get their own network. Home is ours: our phones, my work laptop. [1:36] Narrator: Before and after. Who shares a network with the laptop now? What changed? [1:46] Narrator: Before, everyone who ever visited shared Sami's network. Now guests and smart devices have their own, apart from his laptop. [1:55] Narrator: Your router has two passwords. Make both strong and your own, and change the Wi-Fi one when too many know it. [2:04] Narrator: Turn on automatic updates: they fix holes attackers use. No more fixes from its maker? Replace it. [2:12] Narrator: Visitors and smart devices go on the guest network; your own devices stay on the main one. [2:22] Sami: The guest one. Sending it now. [2:29] Narrator: Guests on the guest network, the router updated, and both its passwords your own. Questions? Contact your security team.
