Secure VPN use training: Show Me

Secure VPN Use training in a 2:20 animated story. It covers Using the company VPN correctly; no personal VPNs; report problems. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • State the order on a network you don't control: join it, connect your company's VPN, and only then open work mail, files or apps, as your company asks.

  • Explain why only your company's VPN is used for work, and keep free or personal VPN apps off any device with work on it.

  • Contact IT Support when the VPN won't connect, without working round it.

  • Report a VPN that shows a sign-in page you don't know, a warning, or keeps dropping to your security team.

The story

“Show Me” is the story at the heart of this course. Emma (account manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Emma is in a client's waiting room with the guest Wi-Fi card. In what order should she work?

  • Guest Wi-Fi, then the contract, then the company VPN.
  • Guest Wi-Fi and the contract now, the VPN once she's settled.
  • Guest Wi-Fi, then the company VPN, then the contract.
  • The company VPN, then the contract, and the guest Wi-Fi last.

Correct answer: Guest Wi-Fi, then the company VPN, then the contract.

Why: On a network you don't control: join it, connect your company's VPN, and only then open work files. The VPN needs a network to connect through, so it can't come before the Wi-Fi.

Show Me [0:01] Emma: Emma Clarke, from Nakhlora, for Mr Wassim at eleven. [0:05] Wassim: That's me. Before we sign anything, show me how you'd open our contract from my waiting room. [0:12] Emma: Happy to. I'm on networks I don't control every week, so I do it the same way every time. [0:20] Narrator: Emma has the clinic's guest Wi-Fi card. Three steps. In what order would you do them? [0:30] Emma: Guest Wi-Fi first, then our company's VPN, and only then the contract. VPN first, then work. [0:39] Narrator: On a network you don't control, connect your company's VPN before you open mail, files or apps, as your company asks. [0:49] Wassim: Can't connect, I see. Most suppliers just use a free VPN app. Any VPN will do, right? [0:56] Emma: Not with your patients' data. A free one sends everything through a company neither of us knows. [1:04] Narrator: Use only your company's VPN for work. Keep free or personal VPN apps off any device with work on it. [1:12] Emma: I won't open the contract any other way. I'll call IT Support. [1:19] Emma: Omar, it's Emma, at a client's. The VPN won't connect, and I haven't opened anything. [1:26] Omar: Thanks for not working round it. We had a fault on our side for a few minutes. It's fixed. Try again. [1:34] Omar: And if the VPN ever shows a sign-in page you don't know, or a warning, stop. Report it to the security team. [1:44] Emma: Connected. Now, and only now, I open the contract. [1:49] Narrator: Won't connect? Don't work round it: contact IT Support and wait. Keeps dropping, or looks odd? Report it to your security team. [2:00] Wassim: Come in. You passed. [2:05] Narrator: One habit: company VPN first, and only the company VPN. Won't connect? Contact IT Support. Anything odd? Contact your security team.
