Removable media training: Left on Purpose

Removable Media training in a 2:43 animated story. It covers Found USB sticks, "free" cables and chargers. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • State why a found USB stick is never plugged into anything, not even a spare laptop, and hand it to security instead.

  • Identify the bait: tempting labels such as 'bonus', 'salary' or 'confidential', and sticks or cables left on purpose in car parks, lifts and stations.

  • Charge safely: only your own cable and charger, your own plug in a wall socket or a power bank instead of a public USB port, and 'Don't allow' when a data prompt appears.

  • Report straight away after plugging in something you found, once it is unplugged.

The story

“Left on Purpose” is the story at the heart of this course. Arjun (junior developer) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Arjun's phone is at 3%, his demo is at 09:00, and a cable is already plugged into the platform's USB port. What is the safe way to charge?

  • Use that cable briefly; it only passes power.
  • Find his own power bank in his bag and charge from it.
  • Use that cable, but only until the battery reaches 20%.
  • Unplug the found cable and put his own cable in that port.

Correct answer: Find his own power bank in his bag and charge from it.

Why: A found cable can hide a tiny computer, even for a short charge, and a public USB port can pass data, not just power. His own power bank, or his own plug in a wall socket, is the safe choice.

Left on Purpose [0:02] Narrator: One label nobody can ignore. Eight pouches. A box of new cables. And a list of busy places. [0:12] Arjun: Three percent, demo at nine. Power bank's somewhere in this bag... Oh, a free cable. Even better. [0:22] Arjun: 'Bonus list, HR only'? Someone's going to have a very bad morning. [0:28] Narrator: Can you spot it? Three things here you should not trust. [0:37] Arjun: Allow? Sure, whatever. I know what I'm doing. [0:43] Arjun: Sami, it's Arjun. Found an HR stick at Tower Square station. I'll check whose it is on my spare laptop. [0:51] Sami: Arjun, stop. Don't plug it into anything, not even a spare laptop. It can carry malware or act like a keyboard. [1:01] Arjun: But it says HR. Someone must have dropped it. [1:05] Sami: That label is the bait: 'bonus', 'salary', 'confidential'. Sticks like that get left in car parks, lifts and stations on purpose. [1:15] Sami: And sticks aren't the only bait. Cables are too. Is your phone on a cable you found? [1:23] Arjun: ...It is. And I tapped Allow on something. My mistake. Unplugging now. [1:30] Sami: Good. From now on, only your own cable and charger. A found one can hide a tiny computer. [1:38] Arjun: Wait, so the port isn't safe either? And that prompt wanted my data? [1:43] Sami: Right. Public USB ports can pass data, not just power. Use your own power bank, and tell IT Support about the phone. [1:53] Arjun: Done. IT Support has it. And I'm bagging the stick and cable for your desk. [2:01] Narrator: Found a USB stick? Don't plug it in anywhere, not even a spare laptop. Hand it to security. [2:09] Narrator: Charging in public? Your own plug in a wall socket, or a power bank. Asked to allow data? Tap 'Don't allow'. [2:18] Narrator: Plugged something in already? Unplug it and report it straight away. [2:25] Arjun: Eight of them. And I nearly plugged mine in. [2:29] Narrator: If you didn't buy it and IT didn't give it to you, don't plug it in. Found one? Hand it to security.
