Public Wi-Fi training: The Easy Way

Public Wi-Fi training in a 2:31 animated story. It covers Fake hotspots, sign-in pages, using your phone’s hotspot. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • Identify a network's real name by checking the venue's own sign or asking the staff, because anyone can name a network after an airport or a cafe.

  • Identify a Wi-Fi sign-in page that asks for too much: a real one asks for very little, like accepting the terms; one that wants your work password or card details is closed and disconnected, with nothing typed.

  • Use your phone's hotspot for work on the move, with your company's VPN as your company asks; stop your devices joining open networks by themselves, and forget a network when you leave.

  • Report typing anything into such a page to your security team at once, then change your password.

The story

“The Easy Way” is the story at the heart of this course. Emma (account manager) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

Emma joins 'TerminalB Free WiFi'. A page asks for her work email and password 'for 2 free hours'. What should she do?

  • Sign in now, and change her password after she lands.
  • Close the page and disconnect, typing nothing.
  • Sign in with her personal email and an old password.
  • Sign in: the page shows the airport's name.

Correct answer: Close the page and disconnect, typing nothing.

Why: A Wi-Fi page should ask for very little, like accepting the terms. One that wants a work password gets closed and disconnected before anything is typed; any email or password typed there goes to whoever runs the page.

The Easy Way [0:02] Emma: Free Wi-Fi. Strongest signal. Just tap it. [0:08] Emma: The proposal has to reach the client before I board. And it's a big file. [0:15] Emma: See? Connected. It's the airport. Sign in. Two free hours. [0:20] Emma: The airport wants my work password? A Wi-Fi page should ask for very little, like accepting the terms. [0:28] Emma: And if this page isn't the airport's, someone else gets my work account. [0:34] Emma: Hana said it: you still check the door. Closed. Forgotten. Nothing typed. [0:41] Narrator: If a Wi-Fi page wants your work password or card details, close it and disconnect. Type nothing. [0:49] Emma: Fine. Then the other one. Look, it has the airport's name. [0:53] Emma: So did the first one. Anyone can name a network. What does the airport's own sign say? [1:01] Narrator: Airport or cafe, a network's name is easy to copy. Check the venue's own sign, or ask the staff. [1:10] Narrator: Three ways online. Which one is safest for your work? Choose. [1:20] Emma: The sign says the guest one's real. And it's free. The hotspot eats your data. [1:26] Emma: Real, and shared with the whole gate. For work, my hotspot: my password, nobody else on it. [1:34] Narrator: For work on the move, use your phone's hotspot, and your company's VPN as your company asks. [1:42] Emma: Proposal sent, on my own connection. With time to spare. [1:47] Emma: Laptop, phone: no more joining open networks on their own. [1:52] Narrator: Stop your devices joining open networks by themselves, and forget a network when you leave. [1:59] Narrator: Typed something into a page like that? Report it to your security team at once, then change your password. [2:08] Emma: Fine. You win. That was easy too. [2:18] Narrator: For work on the move, use your phone's hotspot. A Wi-Fi page wants your password? Close it. Unsure? Contact your security team.
