Patching training: Nobody Told IT

Patching & Updating training in a 2:27 animated story. It covers Apps, browsers and plug-ins; the company patch process; end-of-life software. In English and Arabic, with captions you can switch on or off, and a scenario quiz at the end.

What your team will learn

  • State what "no longer supported" (end of life) means: the maker has stopped fixing it, so every new hole stays open and you should stop using it.

  • Report an unsupported or never-updated device or program to IT Support the first time you see it, without assuming someone else has, and use an up-to-date device until IT updates or replaces it.

  • Describe your part in the company patch process: let tested updates install and relaunch when asked, and update apps, browsers and plug-ins only through their own settings or Nakhlora Apps, never from a pop-up on a website.

The story

“Nobody Told IT” is the story at the heart of this course. Omar (IT support lead) is the lead character; the learner watches the situation unfold, spots the warning signs, and sees the right thing to do. Set in Nakhlora Group, a fictional Gulf company.

Sample quiz question

The browser on the room PC shows: "This browser is no longer supported. It won't get security updates." What does that tell Rob?

  • It still works safely; it just won't get new features.
  • Its maker has stopped fixing it; new holes stay open.
  • IT has been told automatically and will update it soon.
  • It will update itself the next time the PC restarts.

Correct answer: Its maker has stopped fixing it; new holes stay open.

Why: No longer supported means the maker won't release any more fixes. Every hole found from now on stays open, so it isn't safe to use.

Nobody Told IT [0:01] Rob: Two percent, and my client's already at reception. I'll use the room PC. [0:06] Narrator: Rob has seen this message before. So has everyone who uses this room. He closes it again. [0:14] Omar: Rob, stop. Don't sign in on that one. [0:18] Narrator: IT's new network check found this computer this morning. It isn't on IT's list at all. [0:24] Rob: It's just the room PC. Everyone uses it. [0:28] Omar: The screen supplier set it up three years ago, with updates switched off. It was never added to ours. No fixes since. [0:38] Omar: That warning you just closed. How long has it been showing? [0:43] Rob: Weeks. I thought someone had told you. I should have. [0:47] Omar: Thirty-one meetings here in five weeks, and not one report. Everyone thought that. Nobody did. [0:56] Omar: No longer supported means its maker has stopped fixing it. Every new hole stays open. So we stop using it. [1:06] Narrator: That's called end of life. This PC's holes are public, and criminals use them. A password typed on it could be stolen. [1:16] Omar: It stays offline until we replace it. Use this spare laptop. It gets our updates, and you're still on time. [1:25] Rob: Honestly? I thought updates were just new features. [1:28] Omar: Many are security fixes. We test them and send them out. Your part: let them install, and relaunch when asked. [1:37] Rob: What about my apps and plug-ins? [1:39] Omar: They need updates too: from their own settings, or our app store, Nakhlora Apps. Never from a website pop-up. [1:49] Rob: The Palm Room PC shows the same message. I'm telling you now, not later. [1:55] Omar: Thanks, Rob. That's all it takes. I'll take it offline now. [2:01] Rob: Right on time. Please, come in. [2:04] Narrator: No longer supported? Stop using it. Tell IT Support straight away: they can only fix what they know about. [2:13] Narrator: One habit: when something's no longer supported, don't assume someone else has told IT. Tell IT Support, or contact your security team.
